Active Child with Balam Acab and Superhumanoids at the Black Cat
Last night I went to the Black Cat to see Active Child with Balam Acab and Superhumanoids. Throughout the night I ran into to familiar faces and old friends, which was lovely.
The night started out with Superhumanoids who sound like the score to a coming of age movie about living in New York City. They were pleasant and good background music to my conversation I was having during. What was interesting about their set, was a group of people were sitting in the back of the room and my friend Lee joked this was the nonjudgmental back section.
Balam Acab, sounded like it would be great if I was in a sleepy dreamlike haze but sadly I was not in right mood for it.
Active Child, was very good. For months, my friends Dave and Darci have been telling me how good they were and when I finally checked them out I liked what I heard. While a lot bands that occupy the space that Active Child does don’t live up to their recorded sound, they do with ease and comfort on stage.
What I liked about Active Child is their music while referencing past ideas their music sounded new and fresh. While there is one song that sounded like a cover of a 90s R&B song, I like when bands take you to a new a sonic frontier and Active Child did do that.
