Battles and Imperial China at the Black Cat
Last night was the second time in a week span I have seen Imperial China. I saw them last week at a house show and they were the highlight of the nigh. I do think they are one of the best bands out there today. If you would have asked me in 2010 who my favorite current band in DC without a doubt I would have responded by going on a gushing rant about just how wonderful they are as a band. While, they have never ceased being amazing newer bands such as Mobius Strip, Beasts of No Nation, and other new bands have strike my fancy.
At the show last night, Imperial China reminded why they are so great. With their loud electronic sounds mixed with a fury I thought only reserved for punk rock.
Battles were loud and electronic as well. It was the first time, I time I saw the entire Black Cat dancing. What I find interesting about battles is that their sounds are new and fresh but seem to reference old ideas. You can see elements in their drum driven experimental nature that seem to stem from punk rock. One member was even in Helmet. Battles sounds modern and plays for a long time making for a great show.

I want to see both of these bands because of your consistent positive reviews! Plus I worship Helmet and anyone connected to it.
