Interview with Montgomery Morris of Last Year’s Men
I had a chance to interview Montgomery Morris of the Chapel Hill band Last Year’s Men. Last Year’s Men are opening for Hot Snakes at the Rock and Roll Hotel on Friday the 22nd, for what should be an awesome show.
Me: Are you excited about your upcoming show with Hot Snakes?
Montgomery Morris: I am stokin’ hard to play with the Hot Snakes. People on the street here in Chapel Hill are steady running up to me and telling me they got tickets and are driving up for it. Killer, should be a fantastic show.
Me: Who is your favorite DC band?
MM: My favorite band from DC right now is Les Rhinoceros, a sort of avant/prog jazz group of real young guys who have a great disc out on Tzadik. My favorite DC artist of all time is Ruth Brown, whose “Mama, He Treats Your Daughter Mean” is one of the best songs of all time. My other band covers that song in our live shows.
Me: I saw Les Rhinoceros at a house show last week they were great.
Have you ever been to DC before?
MM: I have an aunt and uncle in Gaithersburg, so I grew up coming up there every summer and taking the metro into the city to do tourist stuff. I loved it. My friend Cole used to run a house show spot called the Cherch. Last Year’s Men played there once, but we haven’t really had a chance to play much more in DC.
Me: Cherch was great. Sadly they stopped having shows there. I hope you come around DC more often.
What music are you into these days?
MM: My current favorites are the Homostupids, Liquor Store, Brain F/, Joint D/, Paint Fumes, Shapes Have Fangs, Mind Spiders, Los Llamarada, TV Freaks, Cop City / Chill Pillars, Useless Eaters, Feeling of Love, and Natural Child.
